Why we publish this
Pet insurance and veterinary costs are YMYL topics — money and health decisions about a family member. The honest test of a site like this isn't how confident it sounds, it's whether you can check the work. So: here's the work.
Two things we want to be straightforward about.
Veterinary fees aren't regulated in Canada, and no authoritative national price list exists. Provincial associations publish suggested fee guides for members, but those are non-binding and not public. That means every figure on this site is an estimate compiled from public pricing, not a quote — and we say so on every page rather than implying a precision we don't have.
Our citation base is not yet as Canadian as we want it to be. Look down this list and you'll see clinical references (VCA, Veterinary Partner, veterinary colleges) alongside a number of US pet-insurance and pet-care publishers. Clinical facts travel across the border fine; prices don't. Where a figure rests on a US source we adjust to Canadian referral pricing and label it as an estimate — but the better answer is Canadian primary data, which is what the Canadian Vet Cost Index exists to build. Replacing US-sourced ranges with Canadian ones is ongoing work, and this page is how we track it.
How we use a source
- Canadian clinic and provider pricing — used directly, and preferred over everything else.
- Canadian government, regulator and professional bodies (provincial health legislation, the CVMA, veterinary colleges) — used for rules and requirements, which are jurisdictional and can't be inferred from US sources.
- Clinical references (VCA, Veterinary Partner/VIN, veterinary schools, peer-reviewed literature) — used for what a condition is and how it's treated, never for prices.
- US cost publishers — used only as a sanity check on the shape of a range, adjusted for the Canadian market, and always labelled as an estimate.
- Insurer policy wordings — read directly. We quote what the document says rather than what the marketing page says.
